I know many people like to direct seed these crops, but I always start mine inside... they just do better for me that way.

I start them about 3 weeks before I plan to transplant them into the garden (which is after the danger of frost is over and the forecast is looking good). They're not so big that they get transplant shock, but big enough to get a head start on the pests and the growing season.

Also, they don't like to be messed with, so be very gentle when you transplant them.
