Kale Flakes…or, How to Get Your Kids to Eat More Vegetables using “Green Sprinkles”

Kale Flakes…or, How to Get Your Kids to Eat More Vegetables using “Green Sprinkles”

I’m 75% more likely to eat something if it has sprinkles on it. I always grow several long rows of kale in the garden. It’s one of my favorite veggies- it is reliable and hardy and economical to grow. I leave some in the garden through the winter and dig it out of the snow when I need a bunch. Kale is great for beginner …

What are your best tips for breaking a broody hen? What are your best tips for breaking a broody hen?!

“Broody” means she’s sitting on the nest and wants to hatch chicks… and kinda turns into a zombie about it.

This behavior is controlled by hormones… some breeds and some chickens are more prone than others. She gets all fluffed out, makes a lot of noises, and acts totally different.

We don’t want her doing this, because: 1. We don’t want more chickens right now. 2. It’s a shame to spend your beautiful summer days sitting on a nest in the hot coop. 3. When they get like this they stop laying eggs… so we’re missing out on her eggs.

We plan to break her of it this weekend by separating her from the nest box area for a few days— that usually works for us. 🤞🏻🤞🏻

💙💙 Honeyberries are here!! The first ripe fr 💙💙 Honeyberries are here!! The first ripe fruit of the season is sooo very exciting! I think honeyberries might be one of the most overlooked fruits for colder climate gardeners—they’re easy to grow and quite delicious!
.
They taste like a cross between a blackberry and a blueberry, with a hint of kiwi or even cherry! They’re tart but not so tart that you can’t eat them out of hand. The texture is most like a blueberry, though maybe not quite as dense or full feeling. They’re deep purple and obviously loaded with nutrients.
.
They take the least maintenance of any fruit we grow... requiring very little pruning, and being naturally pest and disease resistant. The birds will eat them, and I’ve heard some people have more trouble with birds than others. As far as picking, we usually sit on buckets to pick, so it’s not terribly labor intensive and there isn’t too much bending required.
.
Our bushes are eight years old and we haven’t really kept track, but I estimate we get several pounds from each bush. We pick every two days, and the season lasts nearly two weeks with the ripe berries coming in waves.
.
They can be used in any way that other berries can be used... we eat them fresh, freeze them for smoothies or eating with yogurt, and make muffins with them. I’ve even made them into jam and have dehydrated and freeze-dried some!
.
Most of our plants we got locally, but there are plenty of places online that sell them. There have been sweeter and larger varieties developed since we planted ours... so I’d look for one of those. Heads up: most varieties require a different variety nearby for pollination.

DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN FREEZE RHUBARB?! It can be c DID YOU KNOW YOU CAN FREEZE RHUBARB?!

It can be cut into pieces and frozen raw, or my favorite: turn it into Brown Sugar Roasted Rhubarb, and then freeze it!

Unlike a stewed rhubarb or rhubarb sauce, cooking it this way allows it to hold its shape and gives it the most wonderful texture. And it comes out of the freezer exactly as it went in.

This is my favorite thing to eat on top of yogurt! We eat it freshly made during rhubarb season, and in the depths of winter from the freezer.

Recipe is in my book, Freeze Fresh! 🧊❤️
